The Glass Cliff:
Are women and minority ethnic group leaders held to a higher standard and, if so, why does it matter?
IFSEA evening event: 25 February 2026
6.00 pm – 7.15 pm, followed by drinks (Registration from 5.30 pm)
Location: Mishcon de Reya, 70 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6AH
Women are increasingly visible at the top. However, across sectors, both women and minority ethnic group leaders are disproportionately appointed to senior roles during times of crisis, volatility or reputational risk. This phenomenon, known as the glass cliff, places women and minority ethnic group leaders in positions of heightened exposure, where the margin for error is slim, the scrutiny intense and the risk of failure and blame are high.
This panel will examine leadership trajectories, and how trust, accountability and visibility may operate differently for women executives and executives from minority ethnic groups in high-stakes environments, compared to their peers. We will explore the legal, cultural and reputational implications of unequal treatment of women and members of ethnic minorities in leadership roles – and the role advisers can play in recognising, challenging and dismantling these patterns.
Topics will include:
The mechanics and consequences of the “glass cliff”
How women executives and executives from minority ethnic groups are treated differently in the media when they have made a mistake, and what that means for PR strategy
Legal and governance considerations for organisations
Strategies for building inclusive leadership cultures and resilient leadership tools
How advisers can support resilient leadership, mitigate exposure, and foster cultures of accountability at the top
